Episode Title: Lost Kitten
First Air Date: May 11, 2001
Episode Synopsis
Traveling to Russia, Noir is tasked with the assassination of Yuri Nazarov, a former KGB Agent who oversaw the systematic extermination of the Tashkil ethnic group during the days of the former Soviet Union. Upon the completion of his grim task, Nazarov resigned his commission with the KGB and now wanders the streets like a Saint; making penance for his past crimes by helping refugees. Kirika unknowingly befriends Nazarovs cat, and returns to the hotel with it, much to Mireilles displeasure.
The following day, Kirika and her new friend are greeted by Nazarov, who tells her of the cats identity and thanks her for taking care of him. As he leaves to depart, Nazarov suddenly doubles over in pain, the shocked Kirika rushes to his side to aid him. Sitting with Nazarov by his bedside, Kirika learns that the years of hard work have taken their toll on the ailing Nazarov and that he will soon succumb to his ill health. Kirika struggles internally with the notion of carrying out her mission after seeing how much the kindly old man means to the refugees he helps.

Notes
- Was there a Tashkil ethnic group exterminated by the Soviets?
- As far as our research shows, no such people existed. While the Soviets persecuted many ethnic groups during their reign, the only reference to Tashkil is in relation to Arabic scripture. Tashkil is the name for the signs indicating the vowels in Arabic scripts. They were apparently unknown in pre-Islamic times. These signs help to determine the correct pronunciation of the word and to avoid mistakes.
- What about the Norga, which Nazarov belonged to?
- Norga appears to be another word for Norway in a language called Sámi, spoken by the Sámi or Lapp ethnic group which inhabits the northern Scandinavian countries: Finland, Sweden, Norway and western Russia.
- Notice the text behind Nazarov's KGB photo?
- It's amusing to note that the English text seen behind the black and white photo of Nazarov in his KGB uniform has nothing to do with the ex-Soviet death camp commandant, but about Al Gore and the 2000 Presidential Elections.
